Basketball @ Hitachi Data Systems<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>All of the <a title=\"100 best companies to work for\" href=\"http:\/\/money.cnn.com\/magazines\/fortune\/best-companies\/\" target=\"_blank\">100 Best Companies to Work For<\/a> have similar offerings that make them appealing to current and prospective employees. \u00a0Not everyone can offer the crazy perks of Google and Facebook, but most companies can offer the bare minimum. \u00a0Employees are looking for a wide-range of company characteristics that will enable future professional growth and even provide a fun atmosphere to work for.<\/p>\n<p>In 2006, I provided the top things <a title=\"what employees want from their job\" href=\"http:\/\/chris-salazar.com\/blog\/2006\/10\/24\/what-do-employees-want-from-their-job\/\" target=\"_blank\">employees want from their jobs<\/a>, but the <em>time<\/em> has changed. \u00a0The <em>market<\/em> has changed. \u00a0Our <em>world<\/em> has changed.<\/p>\n<p>Let&#8217;s face it, a company&#8217;s biggest asset is their employee base now. \u00a0The employees are the work horses who produce results and make or break the product. \u00a0Companies now need to focus on keeping their employees happy and not just how to increase profitability, market share and increase shareholder value&#8211;they need to become a best place to work.<\/p>\n<p>If you&#8217;re looking for a new job or are trying to compare two different companies, take these into account. \u00a0If you want to keep your employees happy and productive, this is what you should offer (at a bare minimum):<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u00a0<b>Benefits\/Perks &#8211; There&#8217;s stiff competition here: \u00a0<\/b>Most employers offer benefits, but how do they compare to the rest of the market? \u00a0Aside from the standard 401k, healthcare and vision benefits, employers need additional incentives. \u00a0Companies shouldn&#8217;t be afraid to use some creativity here and think outside the box.\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Suggestions<\/span>: \u00a0in-house services like <a title=\"onsite haricuts\" href=\"http:\/\/www.onsitehaircuts.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Onsite Haircuts<\/a>\u00a0and mobile dry cleaning can be very attractive to working professionals. \u00a0Of course, quarterly bonuses can be a nice perk&#8211;you&#8217;d be surprised how many companies still only do the <a title=\"year end bonus forbes\" href=\"http:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/mikemyatt\/2012\/11\/19\/the-year-end-bonus-do-you-or-dont-you\/\" target=\"_blank\">year-end bonus<\/a>. \u00a0Higher than normal employer 401k contributions show that employees are taken care of. \u00a0Employee discounts on common items like phone carriers, clothing and electronics are nice too.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Make Work Fun &#8211; Keeps employees motivated: \u00a0<\/strong>Driving to the same building and working in the same cubicle every day can get boring and become routine, but an added &#8220;fun factor&#8221; will spice up your professional life. \u00a0At the very least, employers can make work tolerable&#8211;and at least that&#8217;s a start.\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Suggestions<\/span>: \u00a0on campus &#8220;employee appreciation&#8221; events are a great way to make work fun, especially if they include music, food and beverages (soda, beer, wine). \u00a0Everyone needs a break and time to regroup, but not everyone gets that chance at home so work events fit in well. \u00a0Holiday events, on campus vendor food tastings, employee social mixers and health facilities (gym, basketball courts, etc) offer ways for employees to like where they work. \u00a0<a title=\"hitachi sports court\" href=\"http:\/\/media.glassdoor.com\/m\/ea\/1f\/ed\/11\/santa-clara-hq-sports-court.jpg\" target=\"_blank\">Hitachi has a nice sports court<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong><\/strong><strong>Career Advancement &#8211; Help employees move up the corporate ladder: \u00a0<\/strong><a title=\"move up the corporate ladder\" href=\"http:\/\/chris-salazar.com\/blog\/2013\/02\/11\/how-to-move-up-at-your-company-and-the-corporate-ladder\/\">Moving up the corporate ladder<\/a> is tough, but companies who provide ample opportunities will not go unnoticed. \u00a0If an employee is a star performer, help them advance in their career.\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Suggestions<\/span>: \u00a0Helping employees define their growth plan is key to ensuring milestones are set and promotions can be earned. \u00a0Very few individuals like staying in their current position forever and instead are motivated with the opportunity to be recognized and promoted. \u00a0Companies that provide internal growth opportunities will be successfully at retaining talent&#8211;those who provide very few opportunities will see their brightest assets taking opportunities elsewhere.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Work-Life Balance &#8211; Have to be flexible: \u00a0<\/strong>It sounds clich\u00e9, but companies must emphasize and encourage work-life balance. \u00a0This means not requiring\/allowing employees to work during vacation, holidays and excess hours.\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Suggestions<\/span>: \u00a0Offer events and services to help employees balance their time. \u00a0Discounted tickets to amusements parks, shows, concerts, etc encourage employees to take time off and enjoy other facets of life. \u00a0It&#8217;s important that high level managers and executives speak the same language and illustrate work-life balance as well&#8211;if they&#8217;re doing it, you can too.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Challenge Employees &#8211; Create the environment: \u00a0<\/strong>Star employees thrive in a challenging environment; it&#8217;s what keeps them motivated and focused. \u00a0Sometimes when jobs become too easy, it&#8217;s easy to lose motivation and just do the bare minimum;
