{"id":1391,"date":"2014-06-16T16:13:29","date_gmt":"2014-06-16T16:13:29","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/chris-salazar.com\/blog\/?p=1391"},"modified":"2014-06-16T16:14:13","modified_gmt":"2014-06-16T16:14:13","slug":"throwback-post-how-to-become-a-successful-intern","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.chris-salazar.com\/blog\/throwback-post-how-to-become-a-successful-intern\/","title":{"rendered":"Throwback Post:  How To Become A Successful Intern"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>June 2005, I stepped into my first corporate job eager to learn, eager to start my career. \u00a09 years later, I look back and I&#8217;m still that eager professional but just slightly older.<\/p>\n<p>My first year as an intern taught several great lessons&#8211;most of which I still remember today. \u00a0Here&#8217;s a tribute to my <a title=\"how to become a successful intern\" href=\"http:\/\/chris-salazar.com\/blog\/2006\/03\/14\/how-to-become-a-successful-intern\/\" target=\"_blank\">original successful intern post<\/a> and a recap of my tips for all interns starting their career this year.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>How To Become A Successful Intern<br \/>\n<\/strong><br \/>\n<em>1. Always be willing to take on new projects, the \u201cYes I Can\u201d attitude<\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>*This allows you the opportunity to show your skills and build TRUST with your co-workers<\/li>\n<li>*Every new project teaches you something new and this broadens your skill set<\/li>\n<li>*Even if the project is tedious, do it. After all, you have to earn your position<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em>2. Challenge Yourself to NO end<\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>*Step out of your comfort zone<\/li>\n<li>*Network with your co-workers, introduce yourself, find out what they are working on<\/li>\n<li>*Finish projects fast and accurately, then ask for more work<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em>3. Ask questions, Be curious<\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>*If you are unsure of something, ask for clarification<\/li>\n<li>*Make sure you know what needs to get done and when<\/li>\n<li>*Ask questions about your department and the overall business<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em>4. Communicate with your team<\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>*Always follow up on emails and tasks<\/li>\n<li>*Keep your managers informed on your progress with current tasks<\/li>\n<li>*Let your team know of any hardships you are facing, perhaps they will have a suggestion<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em>5. Do not be afraid to fail<\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>*As an intern you will make mistakes, but take responsibility and learn from it<\/li>\n<li>*Do not let failure hold you back from challenging yourself<\/li>\n<li>*Remember that as an intern you are not expected to know everything, so make an effort to learn<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em>6. Prioritize Your Work<\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>*Be careful you do not miss deadlines, so prioritize your tasks so you do not fall behind<\/li>\n<li>*Ask your managers to help you with this\u2026\u201dWhat is most important?\u201d<\/li>\n<li>*Set your own deadlines\/timelines for completion of tasks (preferably 1 day before the actual due date)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>7.\u00a0<em>Find a Mentor who is willing to help your career growth, perhaps the most benefical learning experience<\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>*LEARN everything you can from this person<\/li>\n<li>*Use this mentor as a resource for questions and learning new skills<\/li>\n<li>*Refer to your mentor for advice (especially during hardships)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em>8. Figure out how you can ADD VALUE to your team<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>*What does your team need? Figure that out, and make it happen<\/li>\n<li>*Exceed expectations on your work, never just settle for the minimum<\/li>\n<li>*Be an over-achiever\u2026pay attention to details and exceed expectations<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em>9. SHINE!<\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>*Shine above everyone else<\/li>\n<li>*Make your presence known<\/li>\n<li>*Smile, dress professionally, and perform!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em>10. Be a human \u201csponge\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>*Soak in all of the new skills and knowledge you are gaining<\/li>\n<li>*LISTEN carefully to your coworkers, mentors, and managers\u2026they ALL can teach you something<\/li>\n<li>*Observe your team and company. How do they work together?
